Gayle Byers has been musical director and conductor of the Castlewood Singers since 1986—two years after the group was formed in the Greenwood, Indiana area. During his tenure the group has grown from the original eight singers to a complement of twenty plus voices today. The repertoire has also expanded from totally Renaissance madrigal material to a full range of concert offerings ranging from sacred classics to Broadway show music.

Mr. Byers holds an undergraduate degree in music from DePauw University, a Master’s from Indiana State University, and has done post graduate work at Purdue. Although he has maintained a long and active role in music with various choral organizations, he has been in the insurance business for over thirty years.

He is a former conductor of the Indianapolis Maennerchor and still remains musically active as Director of the Chanters, the men’s singing organization of the Murat Shrine Center in Indianapolis. Gayle is also active in Masonic fraternal organizations and has been honored by the Scottish Rite with the 33rd Degree.

Under Gayle’s leadership, Castlewood has broadened their performance reach from Indianapolis to New York, London, Vienna, Salzburg, and dozens of other venues outside the central Indiana metroplex.
